Soul, what’s it for?
Yesterday I watched Pixar’s latest movie, Soul. It’s a great, beautiful graphics, gorgeous character design, amazing story.
It even made me cry for a few times and made me think hard about my life choices and how I live.
When we make decisions, do we take into account that we might drop dead tomorrow? What if we don’t make it to retirement, what happens to our lives? What’s the point of working our butts off and not actually living? Don’t you want to learn that craft? to speak a foreign language? to fall in love, three times?! to live in the woods? what’s the point of living? isn’t it to live? to have fun? to enjoy your time? of course progressing in one’s career could be fulfilling but if we think harder, is it really? I have my doubts.
One of my goals is to make more money, but I wonder why, what would I do if I had more? perhaps buy more stuff but it stops there.
Things make you happy for a day or two, after that what keeps you happy is the activities and the state of the mind.
Whether you feel loved or love somebody (that loves you back!) or perhaps if you do what makes you happy.
For me it’s working but not any kind of work, stimulating work, when I learn and create.
It’s often coding, or designing a circuit board. Connecting wires, writing firmware, and making electronics do things that are hopefully useful or even stupid! Sometimes I just enjoy cooking, if I had a workshop perhaps I would make things out of wood. I enjoy creating.
What is your passion? Do you live in big city with back-wreaking rents? have you thought why? do you enjoy it? What if you move to a rural area and enjoy clean air and the beautiful countryside? Some people cannot do this obviously because of where they work, but if you are software developer, perhaps you can find a remote job.
We should rethink our lives, thanks to pandemic WFH is becoming the new norm, we should make the most of the situation. Don’t let the opportunity pass.
