We have a new colleague in the office. She’s not going to work with me directly but I’ll have interactions with her occasionally. So imagine it’s her second day and not many are in the office. She asked a couple of questions and I tried to help her, even things that I’m not usually involved with, we got to a point that she doesn’t have a clear idea of what Excel is and what it does. I tried to compose myself and stay calm! I stepped away from her desk and walked back to my own station. I judged her for not knowing Excel and I’m worried that overtime we’ll discover other shortcomings that might cause problems, but anyone can learn. The point is, now I have this image in my mind, sort of a not-so-positive first impression! I’m not gonna dwell on this too much, time will tell. I’m just wondering how an early impression of a person’s competency can affect the way we think about people.
